Bronson never made it out of the third and as he game up 4 earned runs in one pitch to David Newhan. It appeared that the birds had the book on Bronson as he gave up 10 hits and for 8 outs.

Look who is laughing now

Olerud is 5 for 10 in the 2 games that he has started in since returning. Millar went 0-4 on Sunday, and will probably not start Tuesday. It appears Francona is going with the hot hand and for the time being that is the man who was out of Baseball a few weeks ago.

Project Gotham Writing

New York sports writers are in shock after the Sox man handled their streaking Bombers this weekend. Very little changed in the standings over the past three days, but you wouldn't know that from some of the articles written. Enjoy the sober thoughts from News Day writer Ken Davidoff.

Just as the Red Sox's hopes of a last-place Yankees finish are long behind us, the Yankees can forget about the Red Sox collapsing under the weight of their own curse-breaking. Their recent slide proved nothing more than your standard slump.

"We kind of came in here limping, and they were as hot as can be," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "Hopefully, we can go home and get hot."

They're well on their way. In these last two days, eight Yankees pitchers combined to allow 24 runs and 41 hits to their archrivals, and this morning, the Yankees wake up in third place, behind the Red Sox again.

It's an unlikely turn of results, given the star-crossed way the Yankees defeated Boston on Friday night. But not as unlikely when you consider that the Yankees have offered little to convince us that they have overtaken the defending World Series champions.

They deserve credit for their resurgence of the last month, for not allowing themselves to become the most expensive flop in professional sports history. But really, they essentially beat up on patsies in Oakland, Seattle and Detroit, while showing some grit against the Mets.

Life Returns to Normal

The fellowship of the miserable is back and all is well with the world. Some how the impending sweep from the Yankees won't as much as I thought it would. This is how life is supposed to be. Expect the worst and you can't be disappointed. Wendell Kim problems have returned to third base. 4 staight road losses. This is the bread and butter type stuff that Red Sox fans have become accustom to, and why should it be any different now? A what would a summer be with out second guessing your manager to the point of calling for his job.

Sheffield up, no one up in the pen, he lets Embree face Sheffield. We all know Sheffield can hit some gas, and we know how straight Embree's gas is, and I mean he crushes this ball, this is third tank, see ya. My god this game turned around so quick and you wonder did this game get away from Francona at this point. I mean, there is no way Embree facing Sheffield, you got to have a right hander into face him. Is it a second guess sure, but you can not let Sheffield beat you.-- Dennis Eckersley

For the Record: Danica Patrick a Sure Thing

I don't like to get off point since this is a Red Sox blog but if one sport needs a hero right now more than anything it is the IRL and that would be hero is Danica Patrick. Remember growing up when the INDY 500 actually meant something? Well it hasn't meant shit for a long time. Ever since CART and IRL went their separate ways 8 years ago, the Indy 500 lost all of it's' luster and commercial appeal. What was once a race that would make the Daytona 500 look like a spring training game is now nothing more than a 20 second Sports Center highlight halfway through the broadcast. This Sunday that will all change for one day, if Danica wins the race it may change for many years to come. Danica Patrick is the first IRL driver male or female that has ever been mentioned on CNN. The people at IRL can't buy that kind of press because if they could they would be buying it in bulk. Don't be surprised to see Danica win on Sunday, letting Danica win is the smartest thing for the sport, and will probably happen if it is at all remotely possible. Not unlike giving Little E a gift wrapped first NASCAR victory after his father's untimely death. It is something NASCAR needed, and Patrick winning this Sunday is what the IRL needs now more than ever.

A Bad Day

One time in college I got arrested in my dorm room for drinking a beer in my dorm room. Later that day I returned to my dorm room to be greeted by my Japanese exchange student and her friends. A few moments of small talk later had me explaining to them that I was having a bad day. Lost in translation or lack there of my Asian friends thought I said it was my birthday, and took it upon themselves to go out and get me birthday card, cake, and then sang 'happy birthday' to me. It was still a bad day, but the humor was the silver lining to it; being able to laugh about it. Now every time I have a bad day I think about Japanese people singing me a horrible rendition of 'Happy Birthday' and it usually makes me laugh. Today Red Sox fans have no birthday cake to eat, Gabe Kapler will not be singing Happy Birthday to anyone, and there will be no silly Asian people to laugh at. The Sox got swept by Toronto, the Yankees swept the Tigers, the Sox went from second place to second to last. Schilling, the Sox one year wonder, may not pitch for 3 more months! Could it get any worse? Well, Wakefield faces Randy Johnson Friday night.

Yankees Horrible Start Erased

Three weeks ago the Sox were two games out of first place and the Yankees were tied for last place. Fast forward to today and the Sox are 4 games out of first with the Yankees less than a game behind them.

The season has taken yet another turn for the worse. The Pitcher who couldn't lose, the offense that could score runs on anyone came back to earth Wednesday night... hard and fast.

Wells Can Suck North of the Border just as Well

In a preemptive strike against David Wells and his propensity to suck the good people at CBC Sports decided to write and article prior to Tuesday's game about what we all have been thinking... DAVID WELLS IS A BUST. Theo has done and great job and we can't officially complain about anything for a full year at least, but Wells sucks and was a horrible singing.

Things haven't worked out as planned. So far this season, Wells has been mostly awful or injured.

The portly lefty spent three weeks on the disabled list in April nursing a sprained right ankle. He returned to action on Wednesday, but wasn't around for long.

Wells was pounded for seven runs and nine hits in only 1 1/3 innings in a 13-6 loss to the Oakland Athletics. It was his briefest start since June 8, 2001.

"It's one of those days you want to find a hole and crawl in it," said Wells, who is nicknamed Boomer. "But I'll be back out there.

David was all too correct, he was out there Tuesday night and gave up 5 earned runs, lost the game (unofficially) thanks to his forth inning performance.

If I don't hit the spot I am in trouble...I am not a power pitcher any more, so I have to scratch and claw to get outs. I guess as you get older, you don't have the power any more, I am not a power guy, and so I got to rely on keeping the ball down to be successful.

Clement 4 < Perfect

Clement receives a bear hug from Ortiz after he gave up just 4 hits in a near perfect game. Clement only gave up 4 hits, more impressively with no walks, and if you removed the 4th inning which accounted for 3 Bravos hits and 2 runs, he only allowed 1 base runner all day.

The Thriller with Da Miller

The latest Red Sox ace de jour, Wade Miller, took a no hitter into the fifth inning and earned his first win in a Red Sox uniform.

Miller followed in the latest trend of struggling pitchers who finally got a win by saying he did not have his best stuff today. Yeah right.

Mirabelli to the DL

Belli was placed on the DL retroactive all the way back to Thursday prior to Friday's game. Doug last started a game as catcher on May 15th when Wakefield tossed a loss. However, unlike last year he has been used as a bat off the bench more often and even as a DH once this year. He apparently sprained his wrist during an at bat in the oakland series. He last played the 18th. Shawn Wooten's contract from Pawtucket and will take Doug's roster spot until June 2 when he is able to come off the DL and return to the active roster. Mirabelli has never been on the DL before in his 9-year career.

Rivalry Weekend

The subway series, The Cubs and the White Sox, The battle by the bay, and of course the Atlanta Braves and the Boston Red Sox. All the great match ups will be featured this weekend and who could forget the Devil Rays, and the Marlins. Sounds great on paper but when the Red Sox meet the Braves it only means one thing, the Sox lose the series. Transplants Hudson and Miller face off Friday night to start the series followed up on Saturday: BOS Tim Wakefield (4-2, 3.61 ERA) vs. ATL TBA and Sunday: BOS Matt Clement (4-0, 3.56 ERA) vs. ATL John Smoltz (3-3, 2.83 ERA).

And why wouldn't Chipper love playing in Boston? The man who has more kids than homers this year (7) knows the Bravos have a 12-3 record at Fenway. But all good things (for Braves fans) must come to an end... some time, maybe this weekend. Vegas is stumped about this one too.

Oh Wells

Today's effort by Wells was so bad that it inspired me to do nothing more than post one of my previous posts about Wells and his super fabulous ways.

It is too early in the season to make any snap judgments but this is what we know:
The Red Sox were the only team in baseball willing to offer David Wells a job this year, he had horrible spring training, and he has looked even worse in his first two starts. Bronson Arroyo is the only Sox starter with a win, and by the way Wells is throwing the ball recently he may never even register a win all season long in a Red Sox uniform. Theo took a gamble on Wells knowing that he threw strikes. It turns out that Theo was only half right. Wells does in fact still throw strikes, they just happen to be strikes that get hit all over the park all day long. In my 20 plus years as Sox fan I have never seen a Red Sox pitcher give up three consecutive home run balls to three consecutive batters. I would be a happy man if I went another 20 years before I saw that again. David, please retire.

Dotel Motel Holiday Inn

The Oakland Closer Sucked Last Week, but did not Suck Again

It was last week all over again. Sox trailed 4-6, Dotel on the mound ready to blow? A man on base, Millar at bat at the end of the game, except this week produced non-sexy results. Millar actually beat out an infield hit to extend the inning. Then Mueller had the chance to be the hero, but he flew out at 12:53 AM and ended any hope of a Sox victory.

The leason to be learned here is to not play teams that have just lost eight games in a row.

Bronson Arroyo came un-done in the fifth inning as he pitched to 9 Athletics giving up 4 earned runs, that pretty much ended his league leading winning streak.

Manny continued to lower his average going 1 for 5 with 2 strike outs.

Sox left 32 men on base? Is that even possible? Well, yes since some of those men were left of base for 3 different batters.

Trot Nixon: In Need of Surgery

Nixon knocked in a key grand slam to help beat the Mariners on Saturday, and he was immediately replaced in the outfield by Jay Payton. Tito stated that it was not a defense replacement suggesting that in the very least Nixon is banged up. Nixon has disclosed that he will need off season surgery on his leg. What is not known is what part of his leg is injured or what kind of surgery is needed. What is known is that it only Johnny Damon (10) has more hits than Nixon (9) in the past week. Nixon is clearly locked in at the plate and any injury in need of surgery does not seem to be affecting his plate performance.

Nixon did what Ortiz and Manny could not in the seventh inning, hit a 98 mile per hour fast ball out of the park, it just so happened that Nixon's long ball was a grand slam. Nixon Put Putz in a hole they could never dig out of.

Worst Game of the Season

The two fill in starters for Wells, and Schilling teamed up to suck harder than an electrical sucking device Friday night. At the end of the day the Sox blew no less than two leads and trailed by 6 runs 12-6. That is all I could watch, there was no hope for a come back with the people coming out of the Sox bull pen.

Foulke Music Sucks

Your closer has an ERA of nearly 8, has as many blown saves as wins, and statistically there are about 250 relief pitchers in the game that are superior to him. Be afraid, be very afraid. I can't imagine a scenario where the sox sweep a team, with back to back walk off wins, and I am not excited in the least. This is the quintessential feel bad win, if there is such a thing.

Millar, who has been slumping all year long (last night not included), was back to his old form with two strike outs and two defensive errors playing first. His only way to save face was to win the game with a walk off homer, and that is exactly what he did. The fast ball hitter sent a Dotel fastball into the light tower for a two run walk off shot. Millar how did you feel about sucking right up until you stop sucking tonight?

• Manny was hit in the head by a heat seaking curve ball in the first inning. According to Tito he felt "woozy" and was pulled from the game as a precaution.

• Now only Cy Young, Rodger Clemens, Mel Parnell, and Luis Tiant have more wins in a Red Sox uniform than Tim Wakefield (118).

• Kevin Millar hit his first homer of the season, and was skunked by his team mates when he came into the dug out, al la Youkilis's first homer last year.

• No one is hotter than Johnny Damon who is hitting .373 for the season. Damon had his third straight multi hit game and is hitting well over .400 over the past seven days.

Not So .... Sexy Results

Miller time was called short after five innings and 2 earned runs. But after 18 innings of baseball the only thing left in anyones mind was a sexy 4 run long ball sent over the wall by Richie Sexon. Wade Miller's debut was overclouded with rain and Cla Meredith's grandslam ball to Mr Sexon.

With 3 losses, an ERA that eclipses his height, 5 long balls given up (just 3 less than all of last season)Foulke registered only his second save of the season without giving up a hit. Our good friends Dale and Holley at WEEI Dale contacted Foulke as he gassed up his truck. How does it feel to possibly find your groove again?

It couldn't get a whole lot worse, so I am definitely feeling better. Yesterday was kind of just the opposite, I got the results but I kind of didn't feel real fresh, but we got the results and that's all that's important... Now my biggest problem is that my arm was too long, In Detroit I shortened my arm up. I didn't have my best change up yesterday; I tried to slow it up a bit more to keep the guys off balance a little more. - Keith Foulke

Edgar Renteria Leaves Game With Finger Injury

Renteria squared to bunt, missed the ball, and was apparently hit in the finger. After meeting with Francona, and Jim Rowe, Renteria left the game with an injury.

Ramon Vazquez inherited Renteria's 0-1 count and knocked in Varitek with an RBI single to give the Sox a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Day Drinking... err I Mean Baseball

Few things make a boring weekday go by faster than an afternoon baseball game, and that is exactly what we are blessed with today. A get out of town game, a way to motor out of motor city and back to the fens, a chance to take the series or split it. It is just the Tigers so I wouldn't exactly call it a call in sick worthy game like a Sox Yankees day game, which almost never happen. At 1 PM Arroyo, the new Red Sox ace of the staff according to the latest MLB promotion, will take his new found confidence to the mound against Dmitri Young and his coworkers.

Bill Mueller Who? (Just Kidding) Kevin Youkilis is knocking those ball side corners and hitting over .400 for the season, 467 to be exact. It was just another RBI single in the eighth from Kevin Youkilis that gave the Red Sox the lead and ultimately the win Wednesday; How does that feel Youk?
