OAKLAND, Calif. - Manager Mike Scioscia is so adamant his players not look at out-of-town scores that suspended outfielder Jose Guillen once went so far as to rip the Angel Stadium scoreboard operator for having the gall to post one.
But on a lazy Sunday afternoon at Network Associates Coliseum, with the Angels fielding a post-clinching lineup of Salt Lake Stingers, the scoreboard was the only thing worth watching. And in the sixth inning of the Angels' 3-2 loss to the Oakland A's, the Angels' most important numbers of the day hit the board: Cleveland 5, Minnesota 2.
At that moment, the Angels learned their playoff fate. They finished with the second-best record among division champions, so they open at home. But it comes at a steep price: They will face the most vicious lineup in the American League and perhaps the two toughest starting pitchers.
The Angels begin their division series with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday at 1 p.m. It most likely will be a matchup of Boston ace Curt Schilling against Angels left-hander Jarrod Washburn.
Game 2 will be Wednesday at 7 p.m., probably Pedro Martinez against Bartolo Colon.
"Those guys are a force," Scioscia said.
